Public Safety Subcommittee

Agency Oversight

The Public Safety Subcommittee oversees the budgets of the agencies under the supervision of the Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security and the Secretary of Veterans and Defense Affairs.

To ensure that the Commonwealth has an efficient, effective and economical system for enforcing the rule of law and protecting the lives, liberty, and property of the citizens of the Commonwealth, by ensuring the proper functioning and appropriate financing of the criminal justice system, the national guard and air national guard, and services for Virginia’s veterans and wounded warriors, and by providing for the safe and secure supervision of adult and juvenile offenders sentenced by the courts, with a view towards reducing future criminal behavior.

Office of Public Safety and Homeland Security
  • Department of Corrections supervises 30,000 offenders in state facilities and 58,000 in the community, with 26 major institutions, one private facility, eight field units, seven work centers, and six detention/diversion centers.
  • Department of Juvenile Justice supervises 800 offenders in six state facilities and two halfway houses, and operates court services units in 31 juvenile court districts.
  • Department of State Police has over 2,000 sworn personnel.             
  • Department of Military Affairs has over 8,200 personnel in the Virginia National Guard and Air National Guard.             
  • Department of Fire Programs assists over 770 fire departments and 40,000 firefighters statewide.             
  • Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control operates 320 retail stores.
  • Six other agencies: Commonwealth’s Attorneys’ Services Council, Departments of Criminal Justice Services, Emergency Management, Forensic Science, and the Virginia Parole Board.
Office of Veterans and Defense Affairs
  • Department of Veterans Services supports over 800,000 veterans living in Virginia, which ranks sixth nationally in the size of the veterans population.
